ANTIQUE EAPG KNIGHTS OF LABOR BREAD PLATE & 2 BEER MUGS. Labor organization formed in 1869. Included are 2 beer mugs and a bread platter. The beer mugs were made by the Central Glass Company in Wheeling, West Virginia during the 1870's.
Each beer mug depicts a laborer and knight shaking hands. The mugs stand about 5 3/4" tall and the top rim is approximately 2 5/8" wide (outside diameter). The bread plate is oval-shaped and was likely made by Bakewell, Pears, & Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1876. It features symbols of industry and agriculturea farmer with a sickle and sheaf of wheat, train and engine, horse, and ocean steam vessel. At the center is a man with a hammer shaking hands with a knight, and the phrase United We Stand, Divided We Fall. The plate measures 11 5/8" long and 8 5/8" wide. The organization replaced the unsuccessful Garment Cutters Union of Philadelphia.
Historians recognize it as one of the largest labor organizations in America during the 1880s. The group was both a fraternal order and a labor union created to protect its members. The Knights of Labor enjoyed immense popularity in the 1880's and reached 700,000 members by 1886.After some unsuccessful unionizing campaigns, deadly labor union rallies, and government efforts to impede labor organizing, members lost faith in the effectiveness of the Order as a labor union. Membership decreased by the late 1890's. The American Federation of Labor largely replaced the group by the early 1900's. The organization became defunct in 1949.
Condition of these Knights of Labor items is GOOD. The bread plate has no chips, cracks, or fleabites, but the top surface has quite a few scratches indicative of heavy use. One beer mug has some cloudiness inside and a shallow flake on the side of the base (see next to last photo). The other beer mug is crystal clear with some minor roughness along the base (see last photo). Overall, these collectible glass items look great and display well.
They would make a wonderful addition to any collection. Please take a close look at the many photos I've provided and judge condition for yourself.
