A prominent figure in the emerging design style of the mid 20th century in Finland, Wirkkala was prolific in his work and excelled at producing beauty through almost any medium. He was especially skilled in designing glassware. As such, he often collaborated with the famed Finnish design company Iittala.

Wirkkala is perhaps most famous for the set of kitchen glasses he produced for Iittala in the "Ultima Thule" pattern. The pattern is made to look like dripping icicles. It is said to have taken Iittala thousands of hours to develop a glassblowing technique that would produce the effect. This set of clear glass luncheon plates are decorated in that superlative Solaris pattern first introduced in the 1970s. The plates are accompanied by the original box. Condition: In overall excellent condition consistent with age a light use. There are some scattered internal bubbles. Light surface scratches on the underside of each.
