The "Épis" (ears of wheat) series of plates and bowls, 9 in total, dates from the same year, 1921, as the "Vases" series, another family of very elaborate plates. This is because René Lalique moved that year to a new modern glass factory in Wingen-sur Moder, where the Lalique Museum is now.

The new plant permitted much more refinements in the design and execution. Here is "Épis Nr 1", a huge "plate" which is more a flat serving tray, with its 31.5 cm (12 1/2) in diameter.

It is the largest Lalique plate ever made and it exists in 3 other sizes, Nr. Although "Épis" also existe as "Coupe Plate" et "Coupe Ouverte" (large bowls), the plate Nr 1 is the largest in the series. The surface is entirely covered with ears of wheat, radiating from a wide center (just like the "Vases" series).

There are 24 ears of wheat, not all the same, and the plate is entirely covered. What makes this plate so original is that. Started to design boxes around 1909. He had just met François Coty, a wealthy entrepreneur who was the epoch's largest French parfumeur and had just asked him design a line of bottles for his perfumes.

Lalique created more than 25 for him over 19 years. This was also the period when he started developing bottles for parfumeur clients, Coty being his mentor and financier. This box "L'Origan" (Oregano or Marjolaine) dates from 1912. It is round, 9 cm in diametre (3 1/2") and about 7 cm high (2 3/4"). The motif represents two women dressed in ample veils and dancing over a flower which can also be a fire with volutes of smoke.

Origan" is photographed and described (photo 9) in Felix Marcilhac's large book (the unofficial Lalique "Bible"), on page 968 of the 2010 French printing under reference "Coty-3. There is a double signature on the base, "COTY FRANCE" with Coty's hand-written signature, and , around the base " LALIQUE DEPOSÉ". The condition is very good: The patina has held remarkably well for a box which is over 100 or even 110 years old.

The box therefore dates from the 1920's at the latest. There is a minuscule chip on the rim of the box, impossible to photograph and invisible unless one looks for it. This box is in an exceptionally good condition and presents excellently. The item "Rene Lalique 1921 Huge Épis Nr 1 Plate with Sepia Patina. VVG" is in sale since Tuesday, September 28, 2021.
