Rene Lalique 1921 Large Vases Plate Nr. 2. Brown Patina with Losses. 11. Good
The "Vases" plates were a very ambitious project for René Lalique. The motif and the theme were complicated, not less than 7 full and different vases of flowers on a plate plus an elaborate center. The plates were manufactured in 3 phases and Lalique waited until he moved into brand new glassworks in Alsace, in Wingen-sur-Moder (where the Lalique Museum now is). The year was 1921 and the "Vases " plates were the first to be produced in the new factory. For this occasion, Lalique created a new company, "Les Verreries d'Alsace" (Alsatian glassworks) and a new logo, shown on photo 7. The signature is shown in the big Marcilhac book (the unofficial Lalique "Bible") on page 210. Photo 7 comes directly from it. All the tableware produced in Wingen between 1921 and 1923 bore that signature (photo 6) but then the customers prefered the Lalique name and he reverted to the old one. There were 5 different sizes of plates, ranging from 17 cm (6 1/2") to 30 cm (12"). 2 plate, the second largest, and it mesures 27 cm (10.8) in diametre. Originally, there was to have ben a whole service, but there were technical complications and only the plates were made. It is one of Lalique's most complicated motifs, 7 full vases with different bouquets, the intervals looking like rosebuds, and an elaborate center, never described by Lalique but which looks to me like a bed of petals. The plates were made either clear or with a brown patina. This is the one with patina but it hasn't held very well and the patina is largely missing. The raised signature in the center, already mentioned, is VDA.
2" is repertoried and photographed in the large Marcilhac book , the unofficial "Lalique Bible on page 702 of the French 2010 edition (photo 6) under reference 3019. The caption above specifies that the plates were only produced until 1930, absent from the big 1932 catalogue (they were too difficult to manufacture) and never made afterwards. The condition is very good with no break or chip, but there are substantial patina losses. The item "Rene Lalique 1921 Large Vases Plate Nr.
