Verlys, Very Large Charger, Orchids, Frosted On Clear, Quite Beautiful

  

The shape is a Charger or Centerpiece bowl and the pattern is "Orchids". You can clearly see that this is a Rene Lalique inspired design. The charger is quite large as it measures 14 1/8" in diameter and is 1 9/16" tall. The charger depicts three Orchids flowers in full bloom that are intertwined with connecting leaves. These are raised up off the interior of the bowl and are done in a frosted glass.

The base glass is clear crystal. The detail is quite nice as you can see veining in the leaves. The exterior of the charger is totally smooth to the touch.

The top lip is polished smooth. In 1920, the Societe Holophane Francaise was set up as a subsidiary of the USA Holophane Company in a glass-works near Rouen in Northern France to make vehicle headlights. By 1925, they had expanded into making art glass vases and bowls. They created a separate department for these products, and named it "Verlys".

Initially the pieces were blown vessels with several layers of glass, smooth on the outside with internal decoration. From 1933 onward, Verlys focused on high quality press-mold glass. They produced clear, frosted, opalescent and colored items with designs typical of Lalique-style glass of the 1930s. In 1935, they established "Verlys of America" in Newark, Ohio. Molds were supplied from France for the Ohio works. Many of the same items were simultaneously made in France and the USA. Production in both France and the USA declined during WWII, as the company increasingly focused on industrial products.

Verlys art glass was progressively abandoned in both countries from 1940 until it ceased altogether circa 1951-52. The Charger is considered to be in very good condition as there are no chips, or cracks. There is a minor flea nick along the outer rim.

This can be felt and is extremely hard to see but can be felt with one's fingertip. There is minor wear on the interior of the piece, however they do not detract from the beauty or value of this piece. This is consistent with its age.

It is signed with a Diamond tipped pen on the exterior bottom center. It is signed "Verlys" and has no molded signature. I believe this piece was made in America and not France because of the signature. The pin-etched Verlys signature indicates this is American Verlys, and not French.

The French Verlys always had a molded signature, and it always included the word "France". Some American Verlys had a molded Verlys signature, but only "Verlys". No store lets you out of the building with the merchandise unless it is paid for.
